Account security: why some players suddenly have a different license

Cfx.re is cracking down on stolen Rockstar accounts. The side effect: for a small share of players the license identifier changes, and their character may seem to go with it.

Cfx.re is rolling out an update to stop compromised or stolen Rockstar Games accounts from being used on FiveM and RedM. It takes effect on Wednesday 24 June and will be rolled out gradually over the following weeks.

What will you notice?

For a small number of players, the license:/license2: identifier changes. If your server stores characters by license, those players may appear to have lost their characters or progress.

What can players do?

Affected players can pick another linked identity as their default, through the notice in FiveM/RedM or in the client settings, then restart the game and reconnect. Still no character? They probably picked the wrong identity. This option is open until 24 June 2027; after that, server staff have to do the migration. Cfx.re also recommends turning on 2-step verification for your Rockstar account.

Advice for developers

Never rely on a single identifier. Store several, so your staff can easily link a character to a new license:

local function getIdentifiers(src)
  local ids = {}
  for _, id in ipairs(GetPlayerIdentifiers(src)) do
    local kind, value = id:match('^(%w+):(.+)$')
    if kind then ids[kind] = value end
  end
  return ids -- { license = '…', license2 = '…', discord = '…', fivem = '…' }
end
RelatedThe xbl: and live: identifiers were removed on 27 April, so don't use them as a fallback either. All of this year's changes are in our deprecations overview.
